October is usually considered a relatively slow season for movies. However, a wide range of Korean films have been hitting theaters this month, from thrillers to comedies and romance. Today in our “Culture Issue“ segment we take a glimpse into the hottest K-movies out right now. For that, we are joined by professor and filmmaker Jae Soh from the Seoul Institute of the Arts. Welcome Professor Soh!

Q1. Professor Soh, data released Thursday showed that Korean movies hit a record-high figure in sales and audience numbers in September, (81 bil. won (US$59.2 million), 8.12 million viewers) especially on the back of the successful movie “I, the Executioner”, , which has surpassed 7 million viewers. Let's start with "I, the Executioner." What's behind the popularity of the film?

Q2. It's difficult to not notice the movie being compared to “Veteran“, or the first movie of the Veteran series, with quite a number of people expressing disappointment. What’s your take on those views and what are the elements that make the second movie different from the incredibly successful first “Veteran“ film.

Q3. Professor Soh Let’s move on from thriller to drama, or romance. “Love in the Big City“ is a movie based on a novel. It revolves around the queer scene in the city of Seoul and the lives of young people. What is it about this movie that's attracting viewers to the theater?

Q5. Let’s talk about a movie that was just released two days ago on Wednesday, and went straight to the top of the box office charts, “A Normal Family”. It’s receiving much attention for being a well-made suspense film featuring renowned actors like Seol Kyung-gu , Jang Dong-gun , Kim Hee-ae and Soohyun . It evolves around moral conflicts. What are your thoughts on the movie and what are your expectations on how it will do?
