High Bar Squats vs Low Bar Squats

One of the core principles of Supertotal training is simplifying your exercise selection so that what you're doing transfers as broadly as possible across both sports 🏋️‍♂️.

The high bar versus low bar debate is a good example of that. Low bar is the better option if powerlifting is your only focus — more weight, better leverages for the sport. But the carry over to weightlifting is pretty limited and juggling both squat styles in the same program adds a lot of complexity for not much extra benefit 💪.

High bar transfers well to the Olympic lifts and still builds plenty of squat strength for powerlifting. It's not a perfect solution for either sport in isolation but for someone doing both it's probably the smartest place to put your energy. Prioritize high bar, keep front squats in the mix and only really shift toward low bar when a powerlifting competition is close enough to justify it.
