That man was Kael.

Kael was the better man. Everyone knew it — including Malachar. But better men do not always make better kings. So Kael chose loyalty over ambition. He chose to stand at Malachar's back and protect the man they gave the crown to instead of him.

He kept that promise through five wars and five kingdoms.

Until the night he finally understood what he had been protecting — and what it had been costing.
