Tuskegee Experiments

The Tuskegee Experiments were a shocking and unethical case of medical experimentation on African American men. In this video, we'll discuss the history and impact of this experiment breifly.

Tuskegee Experiments (from 1932 to 1972)

The US Public Health Service partnered with the CDC and Tuskegee University to observe the effect of syphilis on around 600 poor black farmers from Alabama. The farmers were chosen because they did not have a voice in the larger media landscape and the story would remain under wraps. What began in 1932 continued for around 40 years, even after penicillin became prevalent. It wasn’t until an Associated Press article in 1972 that the public outrage and investigation brought the entire story to light.

Another similar story happened that same year when the American Indian Movement occupied the headquarters of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and found that thousands of native Indian women were sterilized without their consent.
