Mary eventually failed to restore Catholicism in England #royal #viral #shorts #history #tudor
Queen Mary I, the first queen regnant of England, was born on February 18, 1516, at the Palace of Placentia in Greenwich. As the only surviving child of King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, her early life was marked by royal privilege, but it soon gave way to severe hardship.
When her father divorced Catherine to marry Anne Boleyn, Mary was declared illegitimate, stripped of her title of princess, and separated from her mother. Despite these intense political and personal trials, she remained deeply devoted to her Catholic faith.
After the brief reign of her Protestant half-brother, Edward VI, and a successful rebellion against the attempt to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne, Mary finally claimed her birthright and was crowned queen in 1553.
Mary’s five-year reign was defined by her passionate, uncompromising drive to reverse the English Reformation and restore Roman Catholicism to the realm. She re-established papal authority, revived heresy laws, and married Philip II of Spain, a union that proved highly unpopular with the English public.
Her domestic policies resulted in the burning at the stake of nearly 300 Protestant dissenters, a brutal campaign that ultimately earned her the enduring historical moniker "Bloody Mary." Her foreign policy also suffered a devastating blow when England lost Calais, its last continental possession, to the French in 1558.
Suffering from poor health and a series of false pregnancies, Mary died on November 17, 1558, leaving the throne to her Protestant half-sister, Elizabeth I, who would subsequently undo Mary's Catholic restoration.
