Dressage Fail: Degas 12 Is Done - Jill Irving

One of Canada's top qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 has taken a turn for the worse. After 121 starts and 11 Grand Prix Dressage wins, Degas 12 needs to be retired from the show world at the age of 19 years old.

As a rule, week 1 of the Global Dressage Festival is usually a little bit sleepy from a media perspective. Not many of the big names show up and there is not a lot to expect in terms of excitement or drama.

In true 2021 fashion, Canadian Olympic hopeful Jill Irving entered the dressage ring to what would be the first big dressage disaster of the year.
Given that Degas 12 has 121 Grand Prix dressage starts it is rare that he even takes a misstep in the dressage ring.

This week in the Grand Prix test he impressively managed to pull off a generous 63% after making significant mistakes in almost every movement in addition to stopping abruptly and kicking out at Jill Irving's leg every time she added pressure. Degas 12 has been consistently scoring around 70% in the Grand Prix for several years.

In a desperate attempt to gather horrific scores for the Olympic qualifiers Jill Irving refused to retire and carried on through to the end of the Grand Prix test, leaving those of us watching from the cheap seats why so many bad decisions were made by one of Canada's top riders.

One can only assume that Degas 12 has
either been injured or enjoyed too much of the covid life last year like the rest of us. Either way at 19 years old there is little hope that Degas 12 will recover well enough to resume his ranking as one of the top choices for the Canadian Dressage Team.
