Could China Take Taiwan By Force?

On July 18 2019, President US Donald Trump approved a US$2.2-billion arms deal to Taiwan that included the sale of Abrams tanks and Stinger missiles. And in August – months ahead of Taiwan’s elections in which President Tsai Ing-Wen is seeking re-election – the US also approved the sale of US$8-billion worth of F-16V fighter jets.

But has this altered the balance of power with China? Analysts say the Vipers – unlike, say, F-35 jets – are no game-changers.

China regards Taiwan as a ‘rogue’ province to be unified by force if necessary, but can it afford to do so?
