Macchi 205 Veltro

Giant Scale Macchi 205 Veltro at Joe Nall 2015:

The Macchi 205 Veltro was the latest and best Italian series 5 aircraft of WW2. Powered by a DB605 motor pushing +400mph, it was equipped with two 20mm cannons, 2 machine-guns, and it was highly maneuverable. It could out fight all Allied aircraft. Naval Test Pilot, Eric Brown, said it was one of the finest aircraft he had flown. With only 300+ made late in the war, they had little impact, but gained the respect of Allied and German pilots as well who wanted to produce it in Germany.

The colors are all enamel paints from Model Master. Modeling the aircraft my Great Uncle, Giovanni Devincenzi, worked on, it was based in Reggio Emilia, 1944 of the 1st Gruppo Caccia, 2nd Squadriglia of the ANR "Vespe Arrabiate" (angry wasps.) The “smoke ring” pattern which was unique to the Macchi, was very difficult to replicate. All markings were custom made by Jim at Cal-Grapx.

The fiberglass/wood fuselage and foam core wings were scratch build. The wing is carbon-fiber vacuum bagged. Super strong and super light with 2 degrees of washout in the tips. A seldom modeled aircraft, it is difficult to capture the lines of this aircraft as there are many subtle curves. As an example the spinner had to be made. The shape is unique and the position of the prop is extremely far forward.

The use of aluminum printing press sheets was used extensively. It is lighter than plastics and fiberglass and it also provides the right effect for the gun exhaust louvers and many other areas. I grinded steel punches to the shape I needed as was done on the real one. I also made the washers and many other parts on the plane using aluminum and this technique including, canopy, sand collector, oil cooler intake and engine exhaust.

There are a lot of holes in this fuselage. Every single inlet and vent is made for air circulation. Even the scale exhaust has holes for venting. With lots of holes and a strategically placed firewall the RIMFIRE 65cc motor has ample cooling as well as the Castle Creations 160ESC with fan on a 12S. Turning a scale size 24x12 three blade prop this motor/esc combo handles it easily and cool at 112AMPS at 6000rpm. With a 92in wingspan at 27.2lbs the Rimfire can handle 6-7 minute flights with unbelievable power to spare. The Veltro is extremely stable and flies beautifully with no apparent bad tendencies.
