HAMMER DRILL VS. REGULAR DRILL--What's The Difference?!! (Do You NEED a Hammer Drill?!)

Hammer drills and regular cordless drills are NOT interchangeable! They serve very different functions, and operate differently. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain the differences between a hammer drill and a regular cordless drill!

Hammer Drill Vs. Regular Cordless Drill:

Regular cordless drills are basically just spinning machines. They have a chuck and jaw that clamps down on a bit. Then, the motor applies torque to turn that bit. Twist drill bits basically just chop or carve their way through wood.

Regular cordless drills are great for drilling wood, plastics, metal, and even cement fiberboard like hardie plank. But, they are terrible at drilling MASONRY!

To drill effectively through masonry, you need a HAMMER DRILL. Most like a Rotary Hammer Drill.

Hammer drills spin--but they also STRIKE. The hammer drill motor carries out a tapping or chipping function while it turns the bit. This causes the bit to pulverize masonry with the tip, the back out the dust and little chunks with the flutes of the bit.

Rotary Hammer drills are larger, more powerful hammer drills that have a stronger striking action, and can bore through thicker, denser masonry more quickly.

Hammer Drill Bits are built with very tough chisel points to better strike material and crush it. Most of the hammer drill bits have a different shank/shaft, called SDS. This slots into bearings in the collet of the hammer drill.

If you only need a hammer drill a few times a year, many companies make standard cordless drills with a hammer setting. If you need to do a lot of masonry work, you're better off getting a Rotary hammer Drill.

My Bosch Bulldog Xtreme has worked great over the years, and has tackled everything I've thrown at it!
