Sri Lanka's history spans over 2,500 years, shaped by its strategic location and cultural diversity. The island's earliest inhabitants were the indigenous Veddas. By the 6th century BCE, Indo-Aryan settlers established the Sinhalese civilization. The Kingdom of Anuradhapura (377 BCE–1017 CE) marked a golden age, followed by the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa (1056–1236 CE). Buddhism, introduced in the 3rd century BCE, became a core aspect of the culture.

Frequent invasions from South India, notably by the Cholas, influenced the island’s history. In the 16th century, European colonization began with the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch in the 17th century. The British took control in 1815, uniting the island under the British Ceylon crown colony.

Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. Post-independence, tensions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil minority led to the rise of the Tamil Tigers (LTTE), sparking a brutal civil war from 1983 to 2009. The war ended with the defeat of the LTTE, but ethnic tensions persisted.

Since then, Sri Lanka has undergone political, economic, and social transformations, balancing democratic governance with challenges such as economic crises, natural disasters (like the 2004 tsunami), and evolving ethnic relations.
