It’s one of the world’s oldest and largest political parties which ruled India for much of the 72 years of its independence. But today, the 135-year-old Indian National Congress (INC) is facing an existential crisis and has been reduced to a shadow of its former self.

The party that once inspired anti-colonial freedom struggles across the world has been dealt a seemingly fatal blow by the Narendra Modi-led Hindu nationalist party, the BJP. Many of its members are now revolting and switching over to the BJP. Even the party president Rahul Gandhi has offered to resign from his post, following two humiliating and crushing back-to-back election defeats. Leadership challenge appears to be in the offing as well and is picking up momentum.

Will this defeat mark the beginning of the end of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty? And what can the Congress do to turn the tide?
