San Francisco Bay Bridge Earthquake Rebuilding

The entirely rebuilt eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 2013, 24 years after part of its upper deck came crashing down onto to lower deck and severing this key transportation linkage joining the two sides of the bay.

This short April 2021 drive over the Bay Bridge from Emeryville to San Francisco afforded a chance to discuss the ideas of acknowledging where your problems were and the value of rebuilding in an improved, more resilient manner post-disaster.

Here we specifically reference the 1989 Loma Prieta, with the idea being that recovery post-disaster always must face the question of: not rebuilding, rebuilding “as it was,” or rebuilding better than before.
