Empathy transforms a vase of flowers from an object to a subject

The vase is an element of solid materiality that manages to contain ephemeral elements such as liquids, food or even flowers.

In its configuration as a flower vase we find a sufficiently complete object; we have an artefact constructed by our culture, solid, material, artistic and fruit of man’s creative mind that stimulates our imaginations, tells us stories and conveys to us culture and thought.

The vase as an object is directly connected to a natural element, the flower, which comes from nature: seasonal, fragile, ephemeral, attractive, perfumed, a symbol of beauty and something very seductive, that stirs up emotions as well as stimulating the senses of sight, smell and even sometimes touch.

“On Flower Power, The Role of the Vase in Arts,
Crafts and Design” puts forward the vase of
flowers as a model or outline for the construction
of the artificial subject in our digital age. That which is artificial is a product of intentional
human fabrication rather than natural occurrence
through processes that do not need or involve
the human agenda.
The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea is located near Villa Borghese in Rome. It hosts 20,000 works – paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations – and offers a great view on art starting from the 1800’s to today.
