Fire Blackened Burl Bowl Woodturning

I didn’t have high hopes for this piece, but I was so wrong!

I wasn’t sure what hope there was for this Mesquite burl I got from a guy on Ebay. It had a few hints of nice figuring and swirled grains, but most of the top of was burned. I’m not sure if it was in a fire or just sat in a desert somewhere, baking in the hot sun for a long time, but a lot of it was charred. As I started working to get it round, I was getting as much ash as sawdust.

However, it stabilized very nicely in resin and ended up with a deep, lustrous grain that the blue resin accented really nicely. I ended up making it a hollowform and I’m honestly really surprised at how smooth, elegant and beautiful it turned out.
