Why did Apple buy a VR company?

For the last eleven or so years, a startup called NextVR has been developing proprietary cameras and building partnerships to bring live and on-demand music and sports events to your VR headset of choice. That all ended recently, though. 9to5Mac reported last monththis past April that Apple had acquired the company in a deal valued at around $100 million, and Apple latest confirmed the acquisition — though not the price — to Bloomberg. And to seal the deal, NextVR just shut down its website, which now only thanks people for joining them for the ride and mentions that NextVR is “headed in a new direction.”
