15° North are travelling again! This time we are in Poland in the Hugh Tatras, visiting Zakopane, Kasprowy Wierch, Morskie Oko, Pieninym & the Dunajec River Gorge.
Jérémy and Ben here again! We love to travel and to satisfy our wanderlust, we are on a quest to visit as many countries as we can in the world. We love to escape Manchester (our home) to experience the best culture, cuisine and attractions that the world has to offer. Zakopane is a town in southern Poland, sitting high in the Tatra mountains, which form the border with Slovakia. Poland is famously flat – which explains its tragic history of being passed back and forth between empires – but this area decidedly bucks that trend. The region is the home of the Goral people – or Polish highlanders – and their style of dress and architecture can be seen all over the area.
Zakopane is decidedly a resort town and, as such, there is a lot of tourism infrastructure in place to help you see all of the sights. The most famous of these excursions is the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch, which takes you to a height of almost 2000 metres. The summit of the mountain is actually a ridgeway, which is fairly easy to hike. This ridge forms the border between Poland and Slovakia, so as we walked, we were clearly darting back and forth between the two countries.
Next, we head to one of the most popular hikes in the area. Well we didn’t necessarily want to hike – only to visit the lake Morskie Oko – but the road is blocked 8 kilometres from it meaning that you either have to walk, or pay to get a horse-drawn carriage that takes you there. We decided to walk. This decision was based entirely on the urge to walk a healthy sixteen kilometre round trip. The Wall Street Journal recently named Morskie Oko as one of the five most beautiful in the entire world – and I’d be inclined to agree with them.
The town of Zakopane sits in a valley between the mountains and is a booming ski resort in winter. Now, we absolutely love Poland. We keep coming back again and again. And though that’s partially because we think it’s a beautiful country, there is another reason too. The price. Poland is a member of the European Union, but for now they haven’t entered the single currency. Instead they use the zloty and the exchange rate is incredibly favourable toward people visiting from the UK and Europe. Your money goes a LONG way. In fact, your money goes further in Poland than it does anywhere else in Europe. But that’s not going to last forever, because sooner or later the zloty will be a thing of the past once they join the Eurozone. And then it will be game over for cheap trips to Poland – so our advice is to go and visit now, so you can get the best out of your trip there. Because there’s nothing more satisfying than getting a three course meal with wine for under ten pounds, is there?
Nearby is another mountain range, the Pieniny Mountains. Right through the middle of these is the Dunajec River Gorge, on which you can take a raft trips, helmed by the local Gorals. The river is shallow and gentle, making it perfect for rafting as meanders back and forth amongst the mountains. The trip is 18 kilometers in length and lasts around three hours. We went on a glorious summer day, but because you’re so high up, the temperatures are cool and the water completely clear. And around it, the scenery is stunning, with cliffs rising to three hundred metres above the river at times.
When you think of Poland, heading into the mountains might not be your first thought, but if you love the Alps, why not try the High Tatras as a MUCH cheaper alternative? And we can only imagine how glorious it must be in the middle of winter, completely blanketed in snow.
