What is Instructional Design?

Abstract:
If you're lucky, you know an instructional designer—but what do they do? What is instructional design as a discipline and how does it influence the learning experience?

Description:
Instructional design is the process of identifying the skills, knowledge, information and attitude gaps of a targeted audience and creating or selecting learning experiences that close this gap, based on instructional theory and best practices from the field.

It is important to understand how the instructional design process works in higher education and why it is beneficial. Exploring the factors that go into great instructional design—from subject matter experts to learning theories to educational technology—will bring into focus how influential instructional design is in all areas of education.

Presenter Bio:
Since joining TCS in 2008, Gia has helped grow the online and blended programs from one institution with a dozen programs to six institutions each with multiple programs, introducing new technology and processes to streamline course development and maintain the high standards of the institutions she supports. Gia is Senior Director of Instructional Design for TCS and manages a highly productive staff of seven Instructional Designers, one Online Services Manager, and one Director of Educational Technology.
