Troubleshooting Dehydrated Phalaenopsis Orchid | Sphagnum Moss Issues & Fixes for Full Recovery

Hi all! In today’s video I’ll be troubleshooting my beautiful Mini Phal Orchid. This one is a nice mini from Hausermann called Taida Little Pretty X Zuma’s Pixie. I noticed that the blooms faded very quickly which was a red flag and warning that I had to do something soon. Then the leaves started wrinkling which made me take action.

What I found is that it’s in a tight sphagnum moss plug and despite watering 3x per week - the moss was not absorbing the water. Very tight sphagnum moss sometimes does not absorb water and will roll the water off instead of absorbing it. One way around this is to soak it for a period of time to absorb the water, however, I did not notice for weeks unfortunately, so the leaves and roots were wrinkled. When you pour water, sometimes it just will not soak in and the water will roll through the pot.

How did I fix this? Repotted it into a fluffier sphagnum moss set up. Moss that’s less dense with more air pockets will easily absorb the water you give it. It’s more likely to absorb inwards vs. rolling off. This orchid is set back, but I hope with its new set up, it’ll bounce back. Fingers crossed :)

- Only cool growers & orchids in bloom grow under my Eastern facing windows
