All System Diagnostic is where the reader performs a full system scan on all available modules. Clicking on VIN Scan, will communicate with the modules. In my other video using my 2006 Dodge Ram, its modules have more communication capabilities vs the Toyota where it’s an older model vehicle so it has less advanced capacities. Once the VIN is entered manually, Thinkcar is able to decode the information and determine which data is required. If the data library isn’t loaded into the app, it’ll need to be downloaded. With the Pro version, you’re allowed up to five different manufacturer libraries, additional libraries have an added cost.

Once downloaded, enter the saved VIN to do a system scan. Wait a couple of minutes and you’ll be shown another menu for troubleshooting. First, you’ll need to set the location, with this being a Tacoma it’s only a North American model. The other review I release uses the same app, how it’s slightly different based on the vehicle so feel free to check it out to get an experience on testing a slightly newer vehicle.

We can choose to clear fault codes. Keep in mind, a scan tool does not fix the problem. It’s only intended as an assist to help you read fault codes, monitor different variables and clear codes once a problem has been repaired.

Reading data stream is for monitoring various variables such as throttle position, air pressure, air temperature, fuel trim, oil pressure, etc. Many of these values would require the engine to be running.

Maintenance functions is the software required to access specific features on a vehicle. It’s a bidirectional function allowing you to control certain modules such as tire pressure sensors, active lighting, abs activation for bleeding brakes, battery programming, oil light reset, key fob programming, etc. You’re able to download up to five different maintenance softwares. The VINs and maintenance software work together, so you’re able to have access to up to five adding both together, any additional maintenance softwares have an added fee.

OBD functions, this is where you’re strictly scanning a vehicle’s check engine light, so a simpler version of all systems diagnostics. Under this option you’ll be able to scan or clear the codes, check the system readiness, view descriptions of the codes, view live data just like what was shown earlier, freeze frame data, clear codes, check to see if your vehicle is set up for emissions testing, and module information.

For my final thoughts. Older vehicles may not have as much bidirectional programming, so that’s certainly something to keep in mind. With newer vehicles becoming more complicated, this is something that’s certainly needed to help diagnose and even repair certain issues. While the 2 and Pro versions are similar, as mentioned in my previous video, the Pro version is intended for those who do auto repairs on or closer to a professional level, therefore coming in contact with more vehicles than what is typically owned. You’re not having to spend a few hundred to a few thousand like those professional units used in a repair shop environment, so that cuts down your overhead costs. It’s compact which makes it great for storage and or mobile work. Most of us already have a smartphone, this works on both iOS and Android devices, so we’re halfway there. It has excellent flexibility and the interface is user-friendly as well. Even beyond working as a mechanic, this is great for locksmiths who offer key fob or keyless remote programming as an additional service.
