Dr. Nemeth got asked a question today: Is gum disease contagious?

"Yes, gum disease is contagious, mainly through saliva." Dr. Nemeth says. If someone kisses, shares utensils or shares a toothbrush with someone who has periodontitis, they can infect the other person.

What causes #gumdisease ?
Exchanging saliva with a person who has periodontal disease is a major risk factor for contracting gum disease. Other factors are genetics, oral hygiene, and dental plaque.

Gum disease treatment has evolved over the years and the most recent technique to reduce gum swelling and gum disease uses a laser called LANAP to disinfect the pocket and cause reattachment and periodontal treatment.

Just because gum disease is contagious, doesn't mean that everyone who is exposed to the bacteria will get gum disease. Some people are resistant and others are susceptible.
