Because We Are: A Portrait of My Father: Gulzar, Meghna Gulzar & Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri
Gulzar is a poet, filmmaker, lyricist and writer. Born in Jhelum, now in Pakistan, he spent his school days in Delhi and then came to Bombay, to a celebrated career in films. The poet in him flourished simultaneously; he was closely associated with the Progressive Writers Movement. Many collections of poems, short stories and scripts have flowed from his pen. His creative repertoire also includes plays, ballets, music albums, serials as well as books for children. His works have been translated into many languages and received national and international acclaim. He is a seven-time recipient of the prestigious National Award as well as 21 Filmfare Awards. He won the 2002 Sahitya Akademi Award for Best Urdu Writer and was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2004. He was awarded the 2009 Academy Award for Best Original Song (‘Jai Ho’ in Slumdog Millionaire), the 27th Indira Gandhi National Integration Award in 2012, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2013 as well as a degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) from Rabindra Bharati, University of Kolkata in 2015.

Meghna Gulzar began her film career assisting director Saeed Akhtar Mirza on the National Award-winning Naseem and went on to study filmmaking at the Tisch School of Arts, New York University. She also assisted her father, poet, writer and director Gulzar, on some of his notable films. Along writing her own scripts, Gulzar has made documentaries for Doordarshan on contemporary issues. Her film based on the Arushi Talwar murder case of 2008, Talvar, received rave reviews as did her latest film Raazi, based on the true story of a young girl married into a Pakistani military family and sent as a spy for India in 1971. She is currently working on her next film, based on the life of Field Marshal Sam HFJ Manekshaw MC.
Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri is an editor and film buff who has worked with some of India’s best-known authors such as Gulzar, Arun Shourie, Kiran Nagarkar, Manu Joseph, Satyajit Ray (with the Society for the Preservation of Satyajit Ray Archives), among others. He has commissioned and published a number of books on cinema that have won the National Award for Best Book on Cinema and the MAMI Award for Best Writing on Cinema and which have been best-sellers, in the process creating a first-of-its-kind dedicated list of publishing on India cinema. He has also translated songs for films like Pathakaand Mere Pyaare Prime Minister for subtitling purposes. In 2017, he won the Editor of the Year Award, instituted by the apex publishing body, Publishing Next. He is a regular contributor to the online film magazine Film Companion. He is the author of two books, Whims a book of poems, and Icons from Bollywood.

Acclaimed film director Meghna Gulzar is the author of Because He Is, a tribute her father, the legendary Gulzar Saheb. In conversation with editor Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri, she speaks of her childhood, the tender parenting she received and the creative connection that she continues to share with her extraordinary father. The session also records his professional and personal life, and offers insights into his phenomenal oeuvre as a poet, lyricist and film director. Gulzar Saheb will be on stage with his gifted daughter, giving us his memories of parenting and the father-daughter bond.
