WW2: The Inundation of Walcheren (the Netherlands) October 1944 - part 1
During World War II, the island of Walcheren became an international battlefield
on two occasions. It was on the frontline in 1940, and again four years later.
Autumn 1944. The Germans have turned the island into a fortress.
The Allies want access to the Port of Antwerp. They decide to flood Walcheren, with drastic consequences. The inundation of Walcherenwas a huge operation. And yet the battle of the Scheldt was eclipsed.....by the airborne landings in Arnhem, and forgotten. Many people died and the reconstruction would take decades. Walcheren, the garden of Zeeland, would never be the same. Looking back you may wonder if this method was effective. Water is often used in warfare, but nearly always in defence to stop an attack.
