Filmmaker Viatcheslav Amirkhanian was poet Arseny Tarkovsky's (filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's father) caregiver in later years, and spent two decades constructing "Arseny Tarkovsky: Eternal Presence," a lyrical, meditative documentary arranged in the form of a symphony, from exposition to coda. Although Andrei’s mother is more immediately present in her son’s films, Arseny, who died in 1989, is never far in the background, both in the use of his poetry in “Mirror” and “Stalker,” and in the guise of the poet in “Nostalghia.” Arseny’s rich metaphoric use of landscape also finds echoes in his son’s work. But this documentary, with its long takes and studied gaze at the man himself, references Andrei while keeping firmly focused on Dad, whose troubles with Soviet apparatchiks foreshadow Andrei’s own struggles. Amirkhanian creates an elegiac sense of the man through B&W and color footage, preferring voiceovers and silences to the occasional use of direct sound.
