Snowball Shrimp Pregnancy: What Happens During The THIRD Stage?

A shrimp’s pregnancy cycle consists of four main stages.

The third stage is the egg-carrying stage, or "berried" stage. The reason it’s called the berried stage is because the eggs look like little berries but in this case, snowballs. At this point, the female carries the fertilized eggs under her abdomen where she will constantly fan and clean them to provide oxygen and prevent fungal growth. This stage usually lasts about 2.5 to 3 weeks, depending on water conditions and temperature. As hatching approaches, the eggs become less opaque, and tiny eyes may become visible.

This is by far the most incredible stage because, unlike other shrimp, these shrimp carry white eggs. Since the eggs are visible, you can watch as the eyes of the shrimplets start to form, which makes this stage truly spectacular.
