Making Amish Cough Syrup

Our family has been fighting some germs over the past couple of weeks, and the coughing was getting to be a little much. It was time we brought out the big guns - Amish cough syrup.

I came across this recipe online about a year ago on The Milk Mans Wife (http://themilkmanswife.blogspot.com/2009/02/homemade-couh-syrup.html) blog.

The recipe calls for lemons, onions, honey, peppermint schnapps, and blackberry brandy. All of these ingredients have properties that are beneficial in fighting off cold and flu symptoms.

Lemons are full of vitamin C and potassium. They are antibacterial and destroy instestinal parasites.

Onions are packed with vitamin C and phytochemicals to help boost immunity, reduce inflammation, and heal infections.

Honey is antibacterial, antifungal, and reduces throat irritation. It also has probiotics.

Alcohol is used to extract flavors from the fruit ad herbs that is used to flavor it. This helps pull out all the healthy stuff even after it is strained out.

Peppermint Schnapps has the menthol that helps peppermint be a great decongestant and loosen mucus in the lungs.

Blackberry Brandy has the antioxidants and vitamin C of blackberries.

All of these together make for a very potent tincture that is great for killing a cough and giving you great relief when you are fighting off unpleasant germs. Just a heads up, though, this does not taste pleasant. Don't be surprised if your face puckers and your flesh crawls.
