IATVHSS 2022 Rd4 Murray "Hog Heaven" Sean Stratton ATV XC Racing - Can-Am Renegade 4x4 850 XXC

After the first 3 rounds of the 2022 Season, finishing 3rd, 2nd, then 1st, put me just 3 points behind Ben Hergert for the Championship chase, with 4 rounds to go, best 6 out of 7 counting towards Points...
Starting 4th row back in 30+ Class, right before the first row (AA Class) took off, I looked down and noticed oil dripping from the oil filter area😳 after just warming up the quad right before the start. Crap... you gotta be kidding!! What do I do?! Green flag is just about to drop!!! Just changed oil and filter the night before... did I forget to torque the bolts down somehow? I jump off the quad and walk towards the spectators looking for my buddy Scott Estep who might have tools. Didn't see him anywhere so got back to the starting line, throw the quad in reverse and headed straight to the truck for tools, same time as AA class is taking off. Can only image what people were thinking when they saw that😂 Clock is ticking! Holeshot will be crucial today as it's a super dusty race at Hog Heaven in Murray, Iowa. When I get to the truck I hear the next class taking off. No pressure! Ha. Find some tools in a hurry. Check the 3 bolts, unfortunately they are all tight. That means no easy fix. This is where you could park it, and play it safe, since I get one throw-away race that doesn't count towards season points total, I could use it here, but I'd be way behind, and we came to race... so SEND IT!
WOT out of the pits and back to the line just as A Class in front of my row is taking off. Perfect timing. Attach the safety tether and put my gloves on just as Andy points to each rider for the "hands on helmets" command and head nod from each rider that they are ready to rock. "10 Seconds" call comes out, board goes up, when it drops, BAM first off the line! First corner is an off camber left, then a tight right. I was last to the starting line so I'm lined up on the inside, far left. When the quad took off, it pulled to the right a little, which was fine since it set me up to get a better angle on the corner. Unfortunately, at the last race, I had issues with the front right suspension, thinking it was the tire at the time. Wasn't an issue until halfway into the race, so had to send it one more time. Of course the shock would fail first corner this race🤣 Almost sent me off the track but hammered down and it pulled back over a bit. Came in hot to the second corner grabbing the Holeshot, then 270 Zach Haggerty snuck by the inside. Tried the ole crossover move but didn't have a big enough gap going into the 3rd corner that went downhill to the right. Played it safe and tucked in for 2nd and headed into the woods. 6 total racers in class today. A mile in I turned around praying Ben wasn't right behind me, but he was😎 So had to stay hot on the leaders tail for the time being. Ben chased me bumper to bumper for a solid hour at Round 2, before he got around me, never to be seen again on his way to victory. Cant let that happen today... And we had more dust today, so I was praying. Oh yeah, about that oil leak...
10 minutes into the first lap, we come out of the woods, across the dam. Wide open on the 850 rene at 60+ mph and blast by 1st for the lead, before coming into the next corner. I keep the lead and come thru scoring in 1st, Ben shows 0 seconds behind me🤬 Right before scoring I thought I heard my bestest little buddy Waylon Estep yellin for me, so I remembered the spot and hoped his dad Scott would be there next lap, so I could stop and check out the oil issue with his help and expertise. Half way thru lap 2, still leading the race, Ben right behind me, starting to get tired for the first time. 30 minutes in and I come up to the end of lap 2 and I pull over where I heard Waylon last lap, and Scott just happens to be walking by. Lucky dog! I tell him I have oil issues, he jumps over to look, and we both see lots of oil. Days over, I turn the quad off. He keeps looking to see if he can find the source of the leak, then my body starts overheating from no air flow so I tell him I gotta go and I roll off, thru scoring, and over to my pit to find some shade.
About 10 minutes goes by. Complete feeling of defeat. Reflecting on a bad motor meaning the season is over... tough pill to swallow while you sit there listening to 100 other quads continue racing out in the woods. So I check the oil level and it still has a lot left.... I put my gear back on and head back out to battle. Really put the hammer down trying to not lose so many points this round. Next lap I come thru to check timing to see how far back I am, but Chris McKeen is holding a water bottle out for me, so I grab that and miss seeing the score board🤣 Really wanted to know what place I was in, how far back, and how much time left. Lap 5 I come through up to 5th place, 5 minutes behind 4th. Lap 6 I come through in 4th place, just over 3 minutes behind Kendall Kruse in 3rd. Making progress!! #xsmotorsports #atvracing #atvxc
