Père-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris FRANCE FOREVER SERIES, AFDC 11 2020

FRANCE FOREVER SERIES

The France Forever Series: Alliance Française of Washington, DC was proud to welcome published author and exhibited photographer Carolyn Campbell for an online conversation where she also showed images from her bestselling debut book "City of Immortals: Père-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris" on Friday, November 20, 2020 7:00 p.m.–8:30 p.m. EST / 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. PST. This event was in English. A lively Q&A session followed the presentation and is included in the video.

The Père-Lachaise Cemetery takes its name from King Louis XIV's confessor, Father François d'Aix de La Chaise. Situated in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, it extends 44 hectares (107 acres) and contains 70,000 burial plots. Père-Lachaise Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Paris and with more than 3.5 million visitors annually, it is the most visited necropolis in the world. Some of the cultural icons buried there include Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Marcel Proust, Gertrude Stein and many more.

The cemetery is a mix between an English park and a shrine. All funerary art styles are represented: Gothic graves, Haussmanian burial chambers and ancient mausoleums. For the delight of Francophiles, tourists, armchair travelers, taphophiles (cemetery lovers) and aficionados of art and architecture, mystery and romance, we hope you will join us for this memorable evening.
