J.P.Sweelinck - Great Organ Works - Jacques van Oortmerssen (1979)

Jacques van Oortmerssen's first recording for DENON (1979), playing organ works by J.P.Sweelinck. Disc you hear was part of Jacques' personal collection. There is a beautiful story around this disc, which you'll read below (as with the track list)

If you have been around this channel somewhat longer, you'll know Jacques van Oortmerssen was my organ teacher in Amsterdam. I studied with him for no less than seven years (1990-19997). We stayed in rather close contact afterwards -we lived only 170km from each other) until his sudden death (21.11.2015) made an abrupt end to the life of this magnificent man.

Since months now, I was looking for the Denon original vinyl disc with Jacques playing the big Bach E minor Prelude & Fugue. Jacques often told me that that particular recording was his best ever. That disc will come in a few weeks, and I won't give you the story here. Anyways, I asked Tony, Jacques' wife, if she happened to still have one of the original copies of that 1981 disc. The response was affirmative and during our recent visit in Heemstede, she not only gave us that one, but also this Sweelinck disc. It was never played.

She told us that at that time, the Japanese recording label DENON, wanted to fill their catalogs with organ recordings on historical organs. And so they asked Marie-Claire Alain. Marie-Claire did not accept the job, but referred to Jacques, who, few years before, spend some time with her as a student. So Denon knocked on Jacques' door with a considerable envelop full of dollars and the question to record anything anywhere, if it was early music on an old organ. And so this disc was recorded. The next one, that of the Bovenkerk in Kampen, is a direct consequence of this recording. More on that in the description of that video.

To close: this recording dates from 1979. If you have ever wondered why Jacques' career took off so fast (he even became professor of organ in Amsterdam at age 29), you just have to listen to this disc. The control, energy, stability in his playing here already is on the highest level thinkable. Listening to this Sweelinck, one wonders why a man with his qualities, has not given us the complete Sweelinck...

enjoy!
