How To Remove & Separate Tie Rod Or Ball Joint Easily Using Pitman Arm Puller | Demo & Tools Review

In this DIY auto repair demonstration & tools review video, young mechanic Aiman will showcase the Pitman Arm Puller, the front end service tool set makes it easy to separate pitman arms, tie rods, and ball joints without damage.

This Pittsburgh Automotive Tie Rod and Pitman Arm Puller is slim enough to fit into tight areas but sturdy enough for high torque pulls on most cars and light trucks. The heat-treated pulling screw features a protective black finish to prevent rust and corrosion. It only cost about $15 at Harbor Freight Tools. Get the job done with the right part, at the right price.

However, if there is no Harbor Freight Tools HFT store in your area, you can order other brands which might be comparable in price from Amazon. Here are some of them:

In the past we've been using a pickle-fork ball joint separator. Unfortunately, rubber parts can easily be damaged when using this tool. To use a pickle fork, simply slide it between the spindle and the control arm as tight as you can and then hit the free end with a hammer. This drives the wedge between the two points and forces the joint out of the taper. Just like it sounds, a pickle fork looks like a two-prong fork. You hit it with a hammer.

What does a pitman arm do?
The pitman arm is part of the steering component in your vehicle. It is connected to the sector shaft and moves in a circular motion with the help of the ball joint. This motion causes the wheels to move left or right, depending on which way the steering wheel is moved

How do you remove a pitman arm?
This is used to remove the arm from the steering shaft. Position it between the pitman arm and the steering sector; this releases it from the shaft. With the pitman still being held in the centerlink, remove the cotter pin and the nut. Use a 15/16 inch wrench to tighten the puller nut which loosens the pitman arm.
