Today I wanted to share my personal favorite GoPro accessory! I’ll be going over how to make your GoPro footage look more cinematic, smooth, and natural using Neutral Density Filters or ND Filters.

I’ll be describing what an ND Filter is, what an ND Filter Does, and covering some basic GoPro ProTune Settings to help you get the best footage out of your GoPro!

What is an ND Filter?

An ND or Neutral Density filter is essentially a tinted piece of glass that reduces the amount of light the camera is exposed to. Think of them as sunglasses or goggles for your GoPro. By reducing the amount of light the camera is exposed to it allows us to have more control over our shutter speed on our camera and ultimately slow the shutter down.

ND Filters come in various tints however the most popular for GoPros, Action Cameras, and Drones tend to be ND8, ND16, ND32, and ND64.

The numbers represent what fraction of light is being allowed to pass through the filter. For instance, an ND8 filter allows 1/8th of light to pass through, while an ND32 allows 1/32nd of light to pass through.

Why slow the shutter speed down?

We want to slow the shutter speed down in order to get more natural-looking movement as well as some motion blur in our shots. This makes for better-looking and more cinematic action shots.

What should I slow my shutter speed down to?

You want to base your shutter speed off of a simple filmmaking principle called the 180-degree rule. Simply put, your shutter speed should be double that of your frame rate.

Shutter Speed = 1/(Frame rate x 2)

Example: I’m shooting at 60FPS on my GoPro and I’m using an ND16 filter so I can reduce my shutter speed. I should be using a frame rate of 1/120 in this case if we use the formula above.

Example: I’m shooting at 120FPS on my GoPro and I’m using an ND8 filter so I can reduce my shutter speed. I should be using a frame rate of 1/240 in this case if we use an ND8 Filter we are allowing more light in and can shoot at a higher frame rate.

What should I change my GoPro Settings to?

You will want to stay away from the auto settings from here in out and start familiarizing yourself with ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, etc.

In order to utilize an ND Filter, you must be controlling the shutter manually and roughly basing your shutter speed off of the 180-degree rule.

I like to keep my ISO Min at 100 and Max 400. This gives me a little wiggle room without adding too much noise to my video.

Sharpness should be set at low and Color should be set at flat if you plan on doing any color correction in post-production.
