Acony Bell - Gillian Welch with David Rawlings (lyrics)

Gillian Welch's debut album has numerous treasures on it. "Revival", released in 1996 is a stellar cd. David Rawlings accompanies her, but the songs are kept sparse and in keeping with the mountain tradition. "Acony Bell" is about a small spring flower that blooms in the hills and mountains, also known as Oconee Bell. All of her songs do not cover extremely important events as this song shows. I think this album is a perfect cd to go along with "The Songcatcher Soundtrack". It just flows. I hope you enjoy!

From +Alfie Green:
LYRICS
The fairest bloom the mountain knows
Is not an iris or a wild rose
But the little flower of which I'll tell
Known as the brave acony bell

Just a simple flower so small and plain
With a pearly hue and a little known name
But the yellow birds sing when they see it bloom
For they know that spring is coming soon
Well it makes its home mid the rocks and the rills
Where the snow lies deep on the windy hills
And it tells the world "why should i wait This ice and snow is gonna melt away"
And so I'll sing that yellow bird's song
For the troubled times will soon be gone
