You Need More Than Talent to Succeed | Gilbert Bani (AQ) | TEDxBodija
AQ is a Nigerian songwriter and artiste who signed his first record deal in 2001, it took him 4 years of tinkering before he released his debut project in Listen and Understand (a compilation tape) followed by another single, "Things That We Do", which got him an international online distribution deal.
In this talk, AQ took us on a personal journey to explain why many young people need more than talents to succeed in this life.
Taking a break from music to finish his tertiary education at the University of Lagos. A-Q graduated in 2010 and returned to music, this time co-floating a record label, Hustle Inc. A platform through which he started Black Friday Twitter Freestyles; a weekly free download release that got him online recognitions, including from producer Don Jazzy who named him “one of the sickest rappers alive”. In 2018, now signed to Chocolate City. A-Q was part of LAMB August; a rap campaign in Nigeria, and released an album with fellow Chocolate City rapper Loose Kaynon titled Crown to critical acclaim. Under his management of 100 Crowns; a Chocolate City imprint, he also organized the Monster energy campaign - one of the biggest social media campaigns of 2020. He announced his depart from Chocolate city by the end of 2020. His discography at the time would have a total of 12 projects, including a Joint album with one of Africa’s foremost rappers MI Abaga – MI’s ceremonial 10th studio album – and multiple awards wins for his music like Lyricist on the Roll, Rap Album of the Year.
He is currently charting a new course, managing a music incubator program for African artistes that aims to be an enabling part of the next crop of music success stories across the African continent. Gilbert Bani, popularly known as A-Q started music at a young age collecting hip-hop tracks, learning the lyrics & miming them. It didn't take long before he started writing his own lyrics.
