How One Controller's "CALM" Radar Trap Destroyed 300 Japanese Planes at Philippine Sea
How One Controller's "CALM" Radar Trap Destroyed 300 Japanese Planes at Philippine Sea
Inside TF 58’s dim CICs on June 19, 1944, a calm controller turns radar into geometry, vectoring barrier CAP to a head-on trap that shatters Ozawa’s raids, about 300 Japanese aircraft lost. South Dakota is hit; Guam becomes a killing ground. Submarines sink Taihō and Shōkaku. On June 20, Hiyō falls to a dusk strike and Mitscher lights the fleet.
