Paris Day Trip | Day Trip from Paris Itinerary: Chartres Cathedral, Chateau Rambouillet & Maintenon

For the first time ever…the Wandering Ravens are in France! And we couldn’t be more excited. Today’s 1-day road trip takes us out of Paris and through the French countryside to 3 stunning locations:

1. Château de Rambouillet http://www.chateau-rambouillet.fr/
2. Château de Maintenon http://www.chateaudemaintenon.fr/
3. Chartres Cathedral http://www.cathedrale-chartres.org/en/,143.html

All of these locations are within a 1 1/2 hour drive of central Paris and each one is worth the trip.

✈ MORE FRENCH ROAD TRIP DETAILS

Château de Rambouillet was built as a fortified manor in 1368. It was here that King Francis the 1st died in 1547, here that Louis XVI hunted, and here where Napoleon bathed (how cool is that?!).

From Paris, the chateau is a short 1-hour drive south, just 35 minutes beyond Versailles. There is free parking on site.

The Chateau has drawn many great figures throughout history and has been remarkably well-preserved, making it a true journey back in time for any tourist.

In 1783, Louis XVI purchased the Chateau in order to extend his hunting grounds. When his wife, Marie-Antoinette, first visited Rambouillet, it is said she exclaimed: “How could I live in such a gothic toad house!”

In more recent history, Rambouillet has served as the summer residence for many French presidents.

Château de Maintenon…we know less about this one for reasons that will be clear in the video.

As for Chartres Cathedral, the church is so massive that it can be seen towering on the horizon from over 15 miles away!

The Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Chartres, and if you’re driving, you can reach it in an hour and a half from Paris.

For drivers, there is a parking garage on-site and admission to the church is free.

The cathedral is one of the most incredible and well-preserved examples of Gothic art and architecture in Europe and is famous for its reliefs, statues, stain glass, and massive size.

The stained glass windows were created in the 12th century and are the oldest, intact collection of stained glass in the world.

The limestone church stands some 112 feet (34 meters) high and is 427 feet (130 meters) long, it’s immense size supported by row upon row of flying buttresses.

Another notable feature is the famous maze that was built into the cathedral’s floor. Thought by some to represent the spiritual journey of pilgrims traveling to the holy land, the real meaning of the maze has been lost to history. What do you think it could mean?

Besides its significance as a monument to Gothic architecture, the cathedral is also a significant religious site, receiving thousands of pilgrims each year. Who come to venerate its famous relic, the Sancta Camisa — a tunic or veil, claimed to have been worn by the Virgin Mary during Christ’s birth.
