IEO Virtual Seminar: The Economic Weapon: The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War

The IEO Seminar Series hosted Nicholas Mulder (Cornell University) on "The Economic Weapon: The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War" This webinar discussed Mulder's recent book The Economic Weapon: The Rise of Sanctions as a Tool of Modern War (Yale University Press, 2022). Together with sanctions’ impact expert Esfandyar Batmanghelidj (Bourse & Bazaar Foundation), they focused on the following questions:

-What medium-term effects do sanctions have on the country being targeted, and what humanitarian and other ripple effects might they have on other countries and economies?
-How do sanctions affect the operations of international financial institutions like the IMF in response to global shocks like COVID-19? -What economic policies can be enacted to minimize the risk that, like in the 1920s and 1930s, today’s large scale economic blockades might destabilize the international system rather than fortifying it?
