Track 6 of the album Wild Goose (1969), an excellent hidden gem - a truly original mixture of folk and avant-garde / free jazz. A bit different from the stuff I usually post, but you'll probably like it...

"Ich armes Maidlein klag mich sehr" is based on a German folk song from the 14th century. Among Joki Freund's followers it counts as one of his finest pieces, and since it has not so far featured on any normally available record and also fits especially well into a folk/jazz context, it was recorded again for this record as a purely instrumental interlude. There is a bass and drum ostinato throughout the piece and against this backing, a modal ensemble in free jazz fasion is developed. The fixed arrangement then begins with a figure introducing the theme. After the theme, this figure is repeated, giving way to Günter Kronberg's alto solo, one of his best and richest on this record. Then the melody follows again and the piece finishes with the fading out of the introductory figure.
