Eminent philosopher Peter Singer calls for compulsory vaccines

Bioethicist and moral philosopher Peter Singer has called for compulsory vaccinations in Australia, comparing the debate to the introduction of compulsory seatbelt laws.

“Well the problem is, people who don’t want the vaccine are actually putting others at risk,” Mr Singer told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“Anyone who wants to go out in the community, to use public transport, to go to the cinema: if they’re not vaccinated then there’s a higher probability they’re spreading the disease and putting people at risk."

Mr Singer compared compulsory vaccination to compulsory seatbelt laws, which he argued induced “somewhat similar fears” amongst the community at the time.

“There were somewhat similar fears that seatbelts might not work well, and might actually imperil your life.

“But of course, all the evidence was that you were in much, much more danger if you didn’t wear a seatbelt and the public has accepted that now.

“I think the case is, in a way, even stronger in the case of vaccination because you are putting other people at risk.”
