Industrial Shop Cabinets - Part 1 - The Boxes and Face Frames
These industrial looking shop cabinets are perfect for your garage, fabrication shop or other makerspace.
Part 1 shows how to assemble the cabinet carcasses using 3/4" Melamine board. I used black Melamine to give it a nice finished look on the insides. The face frames are made from 3/4" primed pine boards that I painted using Rust oleum Matte Hammered Black.
For this 8' run of both upper and base cabinets I made 3 each at 32" wide measured from the outer edge of the face frame. I build my base cabinets to sit on a separate 2x6 base which allows for shorter side pieces and makes for more efficient use of the sheet goods.
The face frame stiles are 1" wide and are flush with the inside edge of the cabinet. The stiles for both the uppers and base cabinets are 31 3/4" long. The horizontal rails are 1 1/2" wide and 30" long. The upper cabinets get a rail at the top and bottom with the top of the bottom rail flush with the top of the lower shelf. This makes for a 3/4" lip that hangs below the cabinet and hides the cut ends. The base cabinets use the same 30" long rails and the number of them varies based on the type of base cabinet it is.
