Class 6 Maths Chapter 3 – Number Play | 3.8 Mental Math | Page 65-66 | Vivek Sir
In this video, Vivek Sir explains Section 3.8 – Mental Math from Pages 65 and 66 of Chapter 3: Number Play from the new NCERT Class 6 Maths textbook Ganita Prakash for the 2026–2027 session.
📖 Topics Covered in This Video:
Chapter 3: Number Play — 3.8 Mental Math (Page 65-66)
✅ Making Target Numbers Mentally
In this section, students are given numbers in the middle column and asked to use them in different ways to make the numbers shown on the left and right sides.
The numbers in the middle can be used multiple times to get the required sums.
For example:
38,800 = 25,000 + 400 + 400 + 13,000
3,400 = 1,500 + 1,500 + 400
In this video, Vivek Sir explains:
How to observe the pattern in the number boxes
How to combine numbers quickly in your mind
How to use repeated addition to make target numbers
Easy mental maths tricks for faster calculation
How to draw arrows correctly from the middle to the side numbers
✅ Math Talk – Which Thousands Can Be Made?
Students are asked:
Can we make 1,000 using the numbers in the middle?
What about 14,000, 15,000 and 16,000?
Which thousands cannot be made?
In this part, Vivek Sir explains:
How to think logically about possible and impossible totals
How to test combinations mentally
How repeated use of numbers changes the possibilities
How to explore patterns in making different thousands
This is a very interesting activity that builds number sense and logical reasoning.
✅ Adding and Subtracting Using Given Numbers
In the next activity, students are allowed to use both addition and subtraction with the numbers in the boxes to make the required number.
Example from the book:
39,800 = 40,000 − 800 + 300 + 300
Then students are asked to make:
45,000
5,900
17,500
21,400
Using the numbers:
40,000
7,000
300
1,500
12,000
800
In this video, Vivek Sir explains:
How to use addition and subtraction together
How to choose the best combination mentally
Tricks to reach the target number faster
How to think step by step without confusion
Easy methods to solve number formation questions
✅ Digits and Operations
This part introduces students to forming new 5-digit numbers using operations.
Examples:
12,350 + 24,545 = 36,895
48,952 − 24,547 = 24,405
Through this, students learn:
How to add two 5-digit numbers
How to subtract two 5-digit numbers
How operations can create new number patterns
How mental calculation helps improve speed and confidence
📘 Concepts Explained by Vivek Sir:
Mental maths strategies
Number combinations using repeated addition
Making target numbers quickly
Using the same number more than once
Identifying which numbers are possible or impossible
Addition and subtraction with large numbers
Logical thinking in number formation
Number sense and flexible calculation
5-digit number operations
NCERT concept explanation with easy understanding
This video is perfect for CBSE Class 6 students following the new NCERT 2026–2027 syllabus.
