2023 BRAZILIAN MUSIC INSTITUTE (WELSON TREMURA)
FROM CHORO TO CHAMBER MUSIC - 2023 BRAZILIAN MUSIC INSTITUTE
The Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) occurred from May 15-19, 2023, at the New World School of the Arts (NWSA) in downtown Miami. The Institute aspires to build great artistry and to teach students and other music professionals to perform and experience Brazilian music and culture during a week of musical practices and training activities. With a mission of promoting Brazilian music and culture, the 2023 BMI expands its outreach in Miami with the collaboration of the New World School of the Arts faculty and students. This powerful musical and cultural experience was founded and designed by Professor Welson Tremura in 2001 at the University of Florida in Gainesville and has since reached thousands of students and audiences. In collaboration with guest artists, music directors, and students, the event promotes a genuine musical and cultural Brazilian experience in the USA.
The 2023 Institute presented a mixture of historical musical compositions, “From Choro to Chamber Music,” combining traditional and vibrant melodies and dynamic rhythms arranged to different ensemble combinations, including a wind symphony (wind chamber group), a vocal group, a cello ensemble, and a traditional choro instrumental group. The repertoire included the Brazilian composers Luiz Borges de Araújo, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ernesto Nazareth, Pixinguinha, Dorival Caymmi, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. These unique mixtures of instruments, repertoires, and arrangements provide contemporary interpretations of the diverse musical soundscape of Brazil. For those already familiar with Brazilian music, we hope the rich harmonies, contoured melodies, and syncopated rhythms will evoke feelings of nostalgia, or as we say in Brazil: Saudade.
