How to Downsize Using the Life Changing KonMari Method

At first we definitely felt overwhelmed at the daunting task before us, but we just took it one step at a time. By asking ourselves one simple question: “Does this spark joy?” we managed to get rid of 75% of our things! We donated and gave away most of it and sold the rest on Craigslist.

The downsizing method we used is called the KonMari Method. It’s based on the inspirational and motivational book by Marie Kondo called “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing”. Some things in this book can seem really out there, for example, she speaks of inanimate objects as if they were alive and have feelings. We just got down with the wierdness because this whole “does it spark joy?” question was really helping us get somewhere.

That’s not to say it wasn’t difficult at times, there were many tears shed during this process because some items will bring up some feelings and emotions that you didn’t know you had. It was mentally and physically exhausting to go through everything we owned but it was SOOO worth it. We cannot recommend this method highly enough and we’re so grateful to our friend, Seth, who told us about it!

The coolest part of this downsizing method is that, according to Marie Kondo, if you do it right, you’ll never have to downsize again! We have found that to be the case because this method doesn’t just teach you how to cleanup your space and get rid of stuff, it transforms your mind and the way you think about the things you surround yourself with.

Our top 3 tips for using this method:
1. Sort by category (not by location) and category order is KEY!
2. Focus on the question: Does it spark joy? Try to tune out all the other thoughts and questions.
3. Clean in silence - turn off the tv and the background music so you can listen to your intuition.
