Arch Structure That Turns Brick Into Compression

Brick arches survive for centuries because geometry distributes force more effectively than thickness alone.

This mason builds a curved clay brick vault by aligning each hollow brick along a continuous compression path rather than relying on steel reinforcement.

The hollow clay bricks appear to be around 8–12 cm thick, joined with mortar layers near 10–15 mm to maintain even pressure transfer across the curve. As the arch closes, gravity redirects the load sideways into the supporting walls instead of downward through a flat span.

What seems decorative is actually structural reasoning. The curve reduces tensile stress in brittle masonry and allows relatively lightweight material to support significant weight through compression alone.

Good tools and technology make work more enjoyable.
