Break Through: The Power of Big Ideas
Caltech launched the Break Through campaign—a bold $2 billion fundraising effort to support Caltech’s extraordinary scientists and engineers in their quest to change the world—in April 2016. In this video celebrating the campaign’s two-year anniversary, a few of our students and faculty talk about why Caltech is the place for talented, fearless, and ambitious scholars to make transformative discoveries.
Hear from: undergraduate chemistry student and former Dabney House president Gabrielle Tender; alumnus and computational biologist Lior Pachter (BS ’94), Caltech’s Bren Professor of Computational Biology and Computing and Mathematical Sciences; chemical engineer Frances Arnold, Caltech’s Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry and director of the Donna and Benjamin M. Rosen Bioengineering Center; postdoctoral scholar and nano-roboticist Stewart Mallory; molecular geobiologist Dianne Newman, Caltech’s Gordon M. Binder/Amgen Professor of Biology and Geobiology and holder of the Allen V. C. Davis and Lenabelle Davis Leadership Chair, Center for Environmental Microbial Interactions; neuroeconomics pioneer Colin Camerer, Caltech’s Robert Kirby Professor of Behavioral Economics and T&C Chen Center for Social and Decision Neuroscience Director and Leadership Chair; graduate student and quantum physicist Nicole Yunger Halpern; 2017 Nobel laureate and LIGO co-founder Kip Thorne (BS ’62), Caltech’s Richard P. Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, Emeritus; and Caltech President Thomas Rosenbaum, holder of the Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and Professor of Physics.
Award footage shown: Faculty members Amnon Yariv and Jacqueline Barton receiving the National Medal of Science from President Barack Obama; alumnus Eric Betzig (BS ’83) receiving the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry; faculty member Mike Brown receiving the 2012 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics.
