Left Atrial Appendage Occluders Reduce Risk of Stroke in AFib Patients

Dr. John Wang discusses how left atrial appendage occluders can reduce the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation patients. Patients with atrial fibrillation have a higher risk of stroke. However, some patients are unable to tolerate blood thinners (anticoagulants). The FDA has approved two left atrial appendage occluders. These devices seal off the left atrial appendage –reducing the risk for stroke and eliminating the need for blood thinners. The two devices are WATCHMAN and AMULET. MedStar Health has a very large left atrial appendage occluder program.
