The Mann-Whitney U Test can be carried out to test whether there is a difference between two groups. To determine this difference ranks are used instead of the actual values. Thus the Mann-Whitney U test belongs to the non-parametric tests and is the counterpart of the t-test for independent samples, but it is subject to less stringent requirements than the t-test. Therefore, the Mann-Whitney U test is used whenever the requirements for the t-test are not met.
