Iryna Kazakova
Iryna was a senior researcher in Institute for Soil Science and Agrochemistry Research. She is specialist with 10 years of experience in the field of agrarian and environmental economics (PhD in economical science). She spend 7 years working as Assistant and as Lecturer of Chair of Productive Management and Agrarian Business in Kharkiv Agrarian University. In 2015 Iryna completed a short-term internship at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Poland and participated in the Economics of Land Degradation Course on “Options and Pathways to Action: Stakeholder Engagement” (UNU-INWEH). Since 2017 Iryna has begun to study permaculture with the NGO "Permaculture in Ukraine".

Discipline 'Economic fundamentals of permaculture' at the Open International University of Human Development “Ukraine”

We consider the training of students in the specialty of constructive ecology and permaculture as a multi-vector, therefore, we offer disciplines a philosophical orientation (Environmental justice and decision-making), and more practical (Assessment of ecosystem functions (of permaculture elements) in urban environments).

Two disciplines as part of the program for bachelor and masters students, specializing in constructive ecology and permaculture. (planned)
1) Environmental justice and decision-making.

The purpose of the discipline is to familiarize students with environmental challenges of our time; the concept of environmental injustice and the identification of its consequences in the world (water, forest, land resources); concepts of ecological justice and its multi-dimensional (philosophical aspects); the concept of decision-making in the triad economy-ecology-society; definition of stakeholder groups and their influence on decision-making at different levels; mechanisms, principles of interaction with stakeholder and decision-making strategies. The main objectives of the discipline are: 1) the concept of environmental justice and injustice; 2) basic environmental legislation and its application; 3) work with stakeholders and decision-making in the triad ecology-economy-socium.
2. Permaculture in cities. Assessment of ecosystem functions (permaculture elements) in urban environments.

The purpose of the subject is 1) familiarize students with the basic concepts of ecosystem functions of plants, forests, wetlands, etc.; 2) consider the main methods of economic evaluation of the most common ecosystem functions; 3) identify and evaluate of ecosystem functions of existing ecosystems in cities; 4) identify and evaluate the potential ecological and economic benefits from applying of various types of permaculture and agroecological structures / elements / zones in cities (eg city gardens, greening of walls and roofs in local area, improvement of parks / forestgarden, green fences / green stripes in city infrastructure, etc.); 5) select of the best variants of agro-eco-permastructures / elements / zones based on the individual needs of the inhabitants and the existing ecological conditions of the territories.
