KORUA Shapes Tranny Finder Review | All-Mountain Powder Eating Machine

Korua Shapes have really made a mark on the snowboard scene the past couple years. Their signature white top sheet/ red base snowboards have an instant classic look to them. In this video I will be reviewing their do-it all swiss army knife snowboard the Transition Finder.

This board comes in two sizes, 154 & 157. It has camber under the feet with an early rocker in the nose to help float in the deep stuff, 20mm set back, 31mm taper (on 157), and a stunted pin-tail. What does that all mean? It was designed to float in the deepest of powder. This board was designed for Japan, Korua Shapes is part Japanese, so it's gonna float and might only give up a little to the longest alpine powderboards, but for it's length the float is absolutely incredible. Their pro athletes that ride this same size are about 20kg lighter than me, so I can only imagine what it's like for them. It has a sintered base that is stone ground at the factory and you can tell it's top notch. On groomers or pow this thing holds it's speed extremely well. I would regularly pass most everyone on flat sections without trying to go in will a lot of speed, it just glides. Also noticeable on shallow powder days, it's great at holding speed up side banks and hills/obstacles in the powder or trees. The flex is on the stiff side of medium. The is definitely some kick in the tail, partially cause it's so stunted, and in the rest of the board you can feel some rigidity, but it's flexible enough in the bumps and trees. It's stiff enough to plow through the chunder and end of pow crud, the short tail gives up a little stability.

There is no edge technology, just a simple curved edge and after riding a bunch of different board with different edge technologies, it feels nice to go back 'to the basics'. The edge hold is great, sidecut is a little on the larger size at 8.2m for 157 board. This lends it to nice large carves and great on cruisey runs. When you get it in tight trees or steeps, the short tail is great at pivoting around quickly and has a lot of control. As it's so small you don't have to work your body as much to get the same result from the board.

Despite it's short length the tail is very effective. Fortunately we're in the middle of a winter storm so we have been getting no-stop powder and plenty of opportunities to take this off cliffs and drops. The first time I landed a drop I could tell I was gonna like this board. It is extremely stable and really helps in the landings unlike, notably, my Storm Chaser which seems to do the opposite. Big or small, fresh or tracked, it very confidence building. Does take some getting used to, but each time is better.

I sometimes forget one of the main expectations of this board was to be good at carving, like many of the Korua Boards, though not as capable as others in the line, the Tranny Finder is a very capable carving board. The waist width is 269mm on 157 board, and more than enough for me (so far) with my size 11 Burton Photon (the boots have Burton's 'reduced footprint' technology). It also has a long effective edge for it's length; super close to the tail, and on the nose it's much higher than many similar boards, notably the Jones Mind Expander. Which to it's credit is more of a surf inspired board, though they are very similar.

About 5-6 days in and everyone so far a powder day, very spoilt in Whistler at the moment, in fact most people would agree we are getting too much precipitation, and it would be better if all of it fell as snow, rather than most of it... Which is playing havoc with the snowpack here in Whistler atm. Can't wait to get it out more on Whistler Blackcomb, especially in alpine to see how it handles the bowls.
