What is the relation between the CRM Act and a Champions League football final?
Here is the video clip of Peter Tom Jones’ opening statement at the Eurometaux’ event “Raw Materials 2030” (18 April 2024) (credits for footage: Eurometaux)
Jones: “We are in the Champions League final. We are in the 90th minute and we are trailing 1-0. Five minutes of extra time have been announced. Hence, we need to score in these 5 minutes and save the game. It’s now or never. These 5 minutes of extra time represent the 5 years we have left before we arrive in 2030, the benchmark year for the #criticalrawmaterialsact. Now is the time to transform meetings and documents into tangible actions. Concretely: companies need to submit their Strategic Projects for CRM #mining, #refining and #recycling NOW. The CRM Board needs to make haste to endorse these projects, provided they meet the ESG-criteria. And then the EU and the Member States need to do everything to respect the proposed timeframes (27 months for new mines, 15 months for refining/recycling project) for providing the required permits. So that we can provide the CRMs needed for our #cleantech factories in Europe! Europe now needs companies to come forward with ambitious CRM mining/refining/recycling plans/projects (LKAB, Boliden, Finnish Minerals Group - Suomen Malmijalostus Oy, Imerys, Savannah Resources PLC, Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project, Rio Tinto, Umicore, Aurubis… what say you?)."

Eurometaux (European Metals Association) 6-part recipe for European resilience:
1. Opening new capacity ⛏: 10 new (metal) mines, 15 processing plants and 15 recycling plants by 2030
2. Restoring our strong industrial basis ⚙
3. Maximising recycling ♻
4. Securing global supply 🌍
5. Providing access to abundant, decarbonised electricity ⚡
6. Training and attracting skilled workers to bridge the skills gap 👷♂️👷♀️ (PROMETIA !)
