Next comes Xiphactinus audax, the Late Cretaceous “terror fish.” Imagine a five-meter-long missile with jaws full of dagger-like teeth, cruising the Western Interior Seaway that once split North America. Living about 290 million years ago, this ancient relative of chimaeras likely hunted squid and soft-bodied prey, slicing through them with frightening precision.
