When to Transfer a Patient to a Trauma Center | Dr. Patrick Kim, Trauma Surgeon
Penn Medicine's Level 1 Trauma Center has the resources to care for the most seriously ill and injured single- or multisystem trauma patients.
Patrick Kim MD, trauma surgeon and the Trauma Program Medical Director at Penn Medicine's Level 1 Trauma Center, reviews when a patient who suffers serious traumatic injuries should be transferred from a hospital to a Trauma Center.
Patients suffering below traumatic injuries can easily exceed the capabilities of a hospital:
--A patient with an injury that the hospital does not treat
--A patient with multiple injuries requiring complex care or extensive coordination of care
--A patient with a single injury that is life-threatening
--A patient with special critical care needs
--A patient with pre-existing medical conditions that increase the risk of complication or death
If you are a physician in the Philadelphia area and your injured patient requires emergent transfer, call the Penn Transfer Center (1-877-YES-PENN). The Transfer Center will work with you to contact the appropriate Attending Surgeon and initiate a 3-way call with you to discuss the patient.
